Two people were arrested after Just Stop Oil activists sprayed orange powder paint on Stonehenge.
Rishi Sunak condemned the action, saying: “This is a disgraceful act of vandalism to one of the oldest and most important monuments in the UK and the world.”
Labor leader Keir Starmer said the group was “pathetic”. “Those responsible must face the full rigor of the law,” he said.
Members of the public tried to stop the spraying and a visitor managed to wrestle a spray from one of the protesters.
Wiltshire Police said: “We have arrested two people following an incident at Stonehenge this afternoon.
“Around noon we responded to a report that two suspects had sprayed some of the rocks with orange paint. Police arrived at the scene and arrested two people on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument. Our inquiries are ongoing.”
The protest came as thousands of Druids and revelers prepared to travel to the monument for the summer solstice.
In a statement, Just Stop Oil said it was time for “megalithic action” and called on the next UK government to adopt a plan to stop the extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal by 2030.
It said: “Continued burning of coal, oil and gas will lead to the deaths of millions. We must unite to protect humanity or risk everything. That’s why Just Stop Oil is calling for our next government to sign a legally binding treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030.
